On railway works in Italy, carried out, or controlled by, British, Dominion or Indian Forces during the period September, 1943 - January, 1946:

2,450miles, approximately, of track were rehabilitated of which,
i) 300 miles had rails blown by explosive charges,
ii) 110 miles had been completely dismantled or processed by the German Rooter machine.
iii) The remainder had suffered bomb and battle damage and all or most major structures were blown in the lengths.
83Tunnels were rehabilitated involving the clearance and repair of approximately 12,000 lin. ft. of tunnel. By far the grater part of this work was done by the South Africans.
490bridges or viaducts were reconstructed involving the use of almost 50,000 lin. ft. of steel bridging.
41,3000,000man hours, approximately, were expended. At one particular period 10,500 military and almost 7,000 civilians were employed.
3003-ton lorries and 40 tank transporters from R.A.S.C. souces, in addition to railway construction units M.T. were in use at a peak period.
2,360,000cub. yards of earthwork were involved in repair and clearance works.
230miles, approximately, of complete railway track was laid down in deviations depots and sidings. In addition, approximately, 280 miles of single rail was used in track repairs. Over 1,600 turnouts were constructed.
10,500lin. ft., approximately, of heavy timber piles and over 40,000 lin. ft. of Larssen or American Steel sheet piles were driven.
193,000cub. ft., approximately, of timber were used for purposes other than piling.
34,300tons of cement were incorporated in repair works.
