INTRODUCTION

At the outset of the Italian campaign it was felt that some simplified method would have to be evolved to facilitate quick and accurate reference to any part of the railway system. The solution was found in the key diagram in the current railway timetable. This diagram, in order to facilitate reference to the timetable, gave a key number to each railway route in the country. This system of numbering was immediately borrowed and adapted to the needs of railway construction. Later it permeated all thought, discussion and correspondence on all railway matters by all Allied organisations. As continual reference is made in the following report to lines by their numbers, a modified line number diagram is reproduced above.
