Chapter I
ORGANISATION AND ADMINISTRATION OF THE RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION EFFORT

Section III.
Stores Supply

5. - Location of Stores Depots.

It was usually necessary for reasons of Stores working to open up a Tn. Stores Depot in the vicinity of the principal ports, to enable inwards shipments of stores to be handled expeditiously. For this reason depots were opened at Brindisi, Bari, Ancona, Naples and Leghorn. Owing to the peculair shape of the country an the layout of its railway system this network of depots was very nearly adequate to cover all railway construction requirements. The addition of two depots, one at Rome to cover requirements in that area, and one at Bologna to cover requirements in the Po valley and North, gave as satisfactory a coverage to all units as could reasonably by expected. During the period of hostilities the average distance of units from the nearest Stores depot was somewhat less than 100 miles. After the cessation of hostilities this distance increased to about 150 miles.
